Road layout and other construction plans in Iceland are often changed to order to preserve the landscape and rocks where the hidden folk are believed to live. According to these Icelandic folk beliefs, one should never throw stones because of the possibility of hitting the huldufólk.
Icelandic gardens often feature tiny wooden álfhól (elf houses) for elves and hidden people to live in. Some Icelanders have also built tiny churches to convert elves to Christianity. Even today, 54% of Icelanders either believe in Elves and Hidden Folk, or won't say they don't believe (just in case!) There's even an Elf School you can attend!
Check back each week to read new stories inspired by Icelandic legends and mythology!
